South India has a rich history of visual arts, performing arts and architecture. The centrality of fine art to the cultures of Southern India can be gleaned from its many temples which house intricately detailed carvings, sculptures, and wall murals. Beginning with the divine and mystical subject matters of the Kalamkari and Tanjore paintings, moving on the royal portraiture of Raja Ravi Verma, the eclectic styles of K.G. Subramanyan and then to the ruralscapes of the contemporary artists, these artists have immortalised the histories of their land on canvas.
